African Politics February 20, 2008

African politics without corruption is like a car without engines. But then again, which political system is free of corruption ? I mean, they say money is the grease in life that facillitates the interaction between people. So it shouldnt be surprising to see play its role in politics too. This is a valid line of argument but its cushion is uncomfortable because it violates our principles of an ideal political arena. This would mean that when we see corruption taking place, we should accept it as the natural flow of life. Ideally, we envision politics thats free of money yet the world that we live in confronts us with the reality that money is so powerful that its impossible to neglect it in politics. (more…)
Another college shooting (Dekalb) February 18, 2008

In the wake of another college shooting, It has become common to notice pro gun-control groups raucously pledging for more stringent laws on gun ownership. In a way, they are right because most if not all of those heinous crimes are committed by guns acquired legally. However, If such law is passed, I would not think that the root cause of the issue has been addressed. The real problem here is not the lax in the law which has created an ease to acquire weapon; Its rather the decadence of morality in society. A closer look at this issues individually or as whole draws a larger picture of how screwed up our society is. These killing sprees not only display the evil side of human beings but also the dynamics in society that have driven a human to this edge. Unless those negative dynamics in society are individually studied and addressed appropriately, There will always be another DeKalb shooting. Of course, imposing heavier restriction on gun ownership would help towards decreasing these instances but I am not fully convinced it would solve the issue completely. If we as people do much better in the fields of respect for one another with a pinch of love and care amongst us then we will go a long way but seems we still have a long way to reach that point.

…One of the best scenes, from one of the best movies ever made. Unfrotunately, I dont watch it all the way through. I always cut it off right before the “Villain” dies. Neal is not really a villian if you trully understand his character… (more…)

An issue that I always have trouble understanding is the current haphazard law that criminalize marijuana. Not too long ago, I saw a documentary on history channel about the criminalization of marijuana and the factors that lead to it. It was amusing to see that the underlying movement which led to the criminalization of this herb was nothing but good ol racism. The people who spearheaded this movement raised baseless assertions, supported by spurious facts to tap into the fears of people perpetuated through stereotypes for ages. Induced by this fear, congressmen and legislators were scurrying frantically to pass a bill that criminalize this herb which tends to create a super black man and the mayhem he entails. During those times, the worst nightmare of a racist person was uncontestdly addressed by congress at the highest level of authority. Here we are in the 20th century and we have an incongruous law which criminalize marijuana sitting next to laws that legalize Alcohol, Nicotine, Valium, Prozac and an array of other government approved drugs produced solely for the purpose of altering humans state of mind. As befuddling and absurd as some of the laws in the U.S constitution are, like the one in California outlawing wearing cowboy boots unless you own two cows, Maybe its time the constitution is reviewed by the lawmakers to scrap off such ludicrous and contradictory laws from the constitution…
