Whover let this cranky old man out of the gates of his nursing home to wander around the globe and conduct diplomacy should be reprimanded severely. Jimmy’s latest attempt to cut a peace deal between Hamas and Israel could be considered a laudable act but let’s not forget that all of Jimmy deals are nothing less of snake oil deals where one country has to pay the price dearly for it. I wonder who is the sacrificial lamb for this one?

Not too long ago in 1978, When Jimmy was the then residing president of the U.S he was praised all over the world for brokering a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. But little did the world know about the country that was throwin under the bus to entice the Egyptians into the treaty table. That country is Ethiopia. A country that has always been at spars with Egypt since biblical times. Those spars which most of them find their roots in the Nile River and religion sometimes erupted into full blown wars. But the 1976-78 Egypt-Israel peace discussion lead by Jimmy was going to change all that. Ol Jimmy boy gave Sadat the sly and wicked wink that he is going to abrogate U.S relations with Ethiopia especially the military relations as long as Sadat is willing to sign his treaty and stop pestering Israel.

In 1977, A time when Somalia invaded almost the whole of the eastern Ethiopian Ogaden region and Ethiopia was desperately looking for the arrival of arms supply they bought from the U.S, Ol Jimmy boy decided to show Sadat his deep committment to the treaty he was pitching. Jimmy, took a major u-turn in US-Ethio relation by terminating all arms supplies to be shipped to Ethiopia under the auspices of human rights violation. A country that used to enjoy the highest military aid in Africa, about 60% of the total military aid given to Africa according to one Kissinger memo was suddenly cut loose during a time when it direly needed it. This created a hole for the Soviet to easily slide into the side of Ethiopia and loan Soviet arms supplies and military advisors to chase off the Somalia aggressors. However, this support also meant falling into the Soviet sphere of influence during the long dreaded years of the cold war. As a result, Ethiopia was to embark on a long, quixotic and unsuccessful experiment with communism by a bunch of dunces who couldn’t tell the difference between communism and totalitarianism even if it was spelled out to them. After 17 years of this experiment the country set backed 100 years back in civilization and the once pride and glory of African independence and the model of success through African leadership morphed into being the poster child for poor governance, famine and suffering.

Such is the iniquity brought by the outright betrayal of this fiendish peanut farmer from the plains of Georgia. This is what he brings when he tries to cut truce between two warring nations. There will be a third nation that will get stabbed in the back and just so it hurts, he twists the knife a little bit.

Its a good thing he doesn’t have the same power this day as he used to and the farcical Bush administration had for once stood on the right side of issues by publicly delegitimizing his actions. But I wonder which nation or military group he was going to stab this time around to appease the Hamas ?
